As X'mas is coming, its time to get some presents for our family and friends. 

Over the period of last 2 weeks, we have received increasing request for custom lamps. These are mostly table lamps which made specially for a friend. From a budget of $58 to $108, you can order your very own customise lamp.

Featured Collection : GUERILLA X JØRG LEVITÄ

As our market is moving towards Scandinavian theme interiors. We figured what better way to understand Scandinavian design than to be in one. We decided to take a short trip to Helsinki.
We decided to skip Stockholm and Copenhagen cos both has plenty of export here.

Helsinki was also voted WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL 2012, so we figured it can't be that bad.
We met many creative individuals and gotten plenty of design inspiration from this trip.

We notice many new home decoration products are moving toward Eco-friendly materials. Use of Copper, Wood, Glass, Marbles and Brass in Home decor, fixtures and furnishing are also observed at many showrooms of the Design District Helsinki.

We decided to develop JØRG LEVITÄ with our existing COPPERWERKZ and WOOD series holders. Each LEVITÄ is integrated with LED, making it very energy efficient and with 10,000 hours lifespan, we are reducing our waste. The color temperature of these are all in 3000K which is a balance between Warm and Cool. We produce a series of LEVITÄ in 11w and 20w which our clients can choose the level of brightness to best suit the function of the space.

11w series are available in 2 shapes, Ø23 & Ø30. They are perfect for clusters at random heights and brightness that is just perfect for Dining.

What our prices like?

As many has spoke to us about how we managed our cost?
The secret lies behind this walls.

We have a assembly facility in Canton which we buy of parts from big factory and QC them before we pay and we buy material which comply to international standards which not many factories would as it drive up their cost.

We are in the project segment and our cost structure is very different from many other retail models.
We take order 8 weeks in advance for commercial clients and usually medium to large orders, clients often want reliable pieces that aren't cheap or at least not cheap looking. Thus higher quantity material such as CE, UL standard fittings are required. Lamps should not rust or fail over time as this may result to temp closure of their businesses due to rectification or replacement works. So quality to the client is very important. Also, when client buys in large volume they will always have a budget and squeezing for prices is normal. 

In the chart, our price structure may seem like we have slim profits but with volume we do make sufficient to cover our expenses. Our expense are relatively low due to the fact we do not hold many stocks. The only stocks we have in hand are project surplus and prototypes which we try to actively clear.

While most of our prototype are 50% paid by client with air freight so these items are sold below its actual cost.

Also, once a while we have clients asking for very premium material and finishing so we do get some questions like:
"Why some of your lamps looks like those on TaoBao and you are more expensive?"
However, what many end consumer who aren't Quality Savvy may fall into traps of Chinese Online merchants.

One of the parts supplier parts to us who also have a TaoBao trading account says;
  "In Taobao, everyday is a price war! If u r the cheapest,u get volume. Everyday we are in the look out for the cheapest materials or engineering methods to cut cost. Anyway Chinese buyer here understand the meaning of 一 分 钱, 一分货 (price and value ratio). Example, If u buy a $2 milk powder, u can't expect the nutrition of a $10. We have a wide range of buyer groups in China. Some just want to look like they can own it, while some are looking for quality and reliability." Loosely translated

So now we stop buying assembled lamps as its harder to QC the quality. Buying parts and assembling our own will ensure each individual components met our requirement and factory can't short change us.

Who are we and what we do?

Like Lights is managed by Guerilla X who are passionate design junkies who love cool lamps & lighting. 

We got into the lighting and design business when we started to renovate out own homes in 2009. Taking advantage of the network from our creative director Jonas [who has rich experience in Hardware supplies and co-own a factory in China], we got some really good lamps [mid-century styles then] at very reasonable prices 50% lower than local retailers. 

This value lamps started to be the centre of conversations in house warming parties and Friends [Inspiring Entrepreneur in mid-life crisis, who decide to abandon their 9-5 jobs to open cafes & restaurants, LOL] start to purchase such lamps while saving loads of cash. 

Since then, the cafe scene boom and each cafe is trying to outdo each other with fiercer decor and furnishing.

"Cafe and restaurants today are looking for unique and even customise fixtures which primarily outdo their peers while making it harder to copy"

With Vintage and Industrial theme growing in demand early 2013. We started buying parts out of China then and receive stocks from USA, UK, Germany and Australia. While we custom design some lamps with our Chinese factory.

Learning it the hard way, we had our design ripped off by the manufacturer and those lamps we custom or designed were sold cheaply on Taobao using lower quality materials. 

"We realised that there is no copyrights laws nor design protection in China."

In early 2014, we rented a small space in China and started our assembly line. Buying wires, bulb holder and parts from local manufacturers and installing them later in our private space. This ensures the following:

1. Individual components complies to our requirement - CE, UL or ROHS standards. 

Its harder to QC once lamps that was assembled, and its common that Chinese factory cut corners at parts that we can't see. 

2. Design Protection

Now that we are buying parts from factory and off market. We do not show our drawing and specs to factory and thus they are not able to ripped off our designs "immediately". Sometimes, experts can pick up the details from just pictures and copy off proportions. That's why our lamps are only on Facebook & Instagram [banned in China]

3. Control of Lead-time

With parts and labour under our control, we are not at mercy of the factories to control the delivery process. We can get our lamps delivered 3-6weeks once deposit is collected.

Why do Commercial clients buy lamps from us?

We provide Consultation, Design & Customs for Cafes, Restaurants, Offices, Retails & Hotels project. If quantities are larger, we offer shorter lead-time, quality and unique designs that are not available along mainstream lighting shop.

"We are able to custom lamps exactly to your prefer theme, paint lamps to your cooperate color to complete the Branding image of your firm."

We have then expanded our client base from Singapore to Jakarta, Bandung, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, Adelaide, Guangzhou and HongKong. 

"However, in reality and many cases, most F&B owners buy lamps very last minute"

Lucky for them, we indent 20% surplus for each orders to buffer for last minute additions, breakage, misplacement and theft of site. This means Home-owners and Smaller F&B establishment can purchase them once the principle client had handover and agreed that such design is allowed for public sales. 

Do we sell to home owners?
The 20% spares had grew over the year and we realised that we need to get rid of them. With commercial orders growing, we need to sell the spares as fast as we can order. To ensure that we do not need to rent a larger warehouse we open our doors to home-owners. 

"Home-owners looking for Odd end and unique lamps loves our Project Surplus. Earning bragging rights for having a one-off commercial duty lamps and a fraction of the cost of regular lighting shop!"

Also, we do stock some popular in stock, commonly requested by home owners. prices will be similar to project prices for these lamps while project surplus are price at project rates or possible markdown lower than cost to clear.
